JELLYROLL + 3s A CROWD - 12 Oct 07

The first of the Electric Inferno Friday gigs went off in spectacular rock and roll fashion. Following the unfortunate cancellation of the Ramon Goose Band, Phil and Dan, otherwise known as 3s A Crowd, stepped in at the last minute.

Playing covers including Kooks and Arctic Monkeys, their acoustic versions rocked almost as hard as their electric counterparts. The passion and energy of their set got the assembling crowd going and before long people were shimmying around the pub and singing along. A perfect start for a night which was about to get even better...

Up stepped Jellyroll, a band I hadn't seen live before but had been very impressed with their internet offerings. With a slight lineup change, playing with drums, acoustic guitar and vocals, the sound was expansive and clear.

You could pigeonhole Jellyroll as a blues band but they're so much more. Like the Rolling Stones, they lean heavily towards the early blues tracks of the likes of Robert Johnson, and take it into a new dimension. The success of contemporaries like The Black Keys and The White Stripes show there is a wealth of modern, raw blues that audiences love.

Both stylish and well performed, Jellyroll are well worth looking out for in the future.
