UNPLUGGED IN THE PARK HOTEL - 14 June 07

This was a gig I had been looking forward to for quite a while. Partly because it meant that the Wivenhoe May Festival was done and dusted and things could return to normal, but also because I was very impressed with Some Best Friend from the first song I heard.

Blending influences from Nick Drake, Stone Roses and The Smiths, Some Best Friend play thoughtful and well crafted original songs. Ed's voice and guitar style remind me of a stripped down Magic Numbers, with a bit more kick and less whining female backing vocals. Although the EP is good, the live performance of Some Best Friend is what stands them out from the crowd. Well worth checking out if they are playing near you. Have a listen here

It was also a special night, not only because of the fabulous light show donated by Kev, but also because we had the monster of all jams at the end of the night. Started by Tim and Mitch, musicians flooded the stage for a mamma-jam of a song fest. Fiona, Dave, Phil, Jon and Miranda all joined in, with the front row of the audience banging and clattering along to renditions of Mustang Sally, Walk on the Wild Side and more.

I never tire of saying it: Another fantastic music night at the Park Hotel!
